Amy McPherson, a Red River Métis artist and designer. Born and raised in Dauphin Manitoba, as a youth she participated in many programs and services through the NWMC. Moving to Winnipeg in 1999 shes spent the last 25+ years learning many different forms of art; including several beading techniques, porcupine quilling, moose and caribou hair tufting, fish scale art, silk floss embroidery, birch bark biting and basketry. In the early 2000’s Amy was introduced to the traditional Métis two needles technique of beadwork through the Louis Riel Institute. Giving back to community is important to her and now a teacher herself she shares her knowledge in person and virtually. Amy is an alumni of MC Colleges Fashion Design and Apparel production program and Banff Centre of Arts Indigenous Haute Couture residency program. Her collections have been seen on several runways. In 2017 she launched her brand Fashion Ikwe Designs, specializing in custom clothing and jewelry which have made their way around the world.

My name is Angela Inkster. I live in Brandon, Manitoba and my business name is Daisy Joy Crafts. I have been crafty my whole life, but just over 4 years ago I discovered resin and was very intrigued. I watched a lot of vidoes and constantly worked on improving my techniques, until my items became good enough that people offered to buy them from me. At the same time, my kids grew up and were more independent so I had a lot of extra time on my hands. I started attending craft markets and have enjoyed learning that aspect as well. I really enjoy working with flowers in my resin and some of the flowers I use I pick and preserve myself. I also like to play with colour and lots of glitter, as it makes me happy. I am so honoured when someone appreciates what I make and chooses to purchase something from me. I hope my pieces bring people happiness and joy.

Andréanne Mulaire Dandeneau was born and raised in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba. She is of Ojibwa/French Métis ancestry. After high school, she studied one year in Environmental Design at the University of Manitoba. In 2001, wanting to pursue her post-secondary studies in French, she decided to move to Montréal. In 2004, she graduated with a Diploma in International Fashion Design from Collège LaSalle. Prior to launching her company in 2005, Andréanne drew from her own contemporary dance experience and began designing costumes for dance troupes. She has been the costume designer for the Nafro Dance Company in Winnipeg since 2004. She was commissioned by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to design an «Alexander McQueen inspired» haute couture gown to promote Ballet’s 2012-2013 season. In 2014, the Canadian Human Rights Museum commissioned her to design a shawl for Ginette Reno, who performed the national anthem, for the opening ceremonies. As an Indigenous designer, she had the opportunity to stylize Lisa Meeches, the host of APTN’S television series Taken for several seasons. In 2016 she earned the Excellence in Aboriginal Business Leadership Award from the Asper School of Business. In 2020, she celebrated 15 years as designer and manufacturer, right here in Winnipeg. Andréanne is committed to fair trade, environmental stewardship, and ethical business practices. Today she operates as Anne Mulaire and continues to explore her Métis heritage.

My name is Ashley, a proud Red River Mètis with roots from Birch River and St. Laurent MB. I was born in Winnipeg and raised here, as well as in Calgary AB. I now reside in St. Laurent MB with my 18-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter. I have always enjoyed crafting and learning new projects. Beading and embroidery came to me through the St. Laurent Aboriginal HeadStart Program. One of the activities the center holds for parents of attending children was embroidering Christmas stocking and making moccasins. I struggled with the beading, so it gave me a challenge. I kept trying and find tutorials to help me get the outcome I was looking for. Now, I can’t put down and thread. I have started to incorporate the beads with the embroidery to make items more, unique! Finding items around the house to add the Metis Sash pattern and colors to, is also fun. Everything I have done aside from the basic; thread and needle and bead instruction, is all self-taught. My father beaded when he was younger, but he gave it up to raise his family. In a way I see myself continuing, what he started. Both my Grandma and Memere also used a needle and thread to sew, patch and make things pretty with what they had. I find colors that I like, from TV, a picture, Facebook, a t-shirt or even from a toy in my daughters toybox and just put it together. Everything I do is done as I go. I could always make patterns and use them; however, I think doing it this way, makes it unique, to me. I am now working on earrings and beaded rings; however, those are still in the learning process. Mètis people are known as the flower beadwork people. I want to continue to learn more to keep this part of our culture alive for the next generation, as I now teach my daughter to bead and embroider. One day she will be awesome at color coordination, but until then I will enjoy watching her make mix-matched bracelets and key chains for her family.

My father’s family are Red River Métis from Winnipeg and the Qu’Appelle Valley. I am originally from Penticton, British Columbia and my family moved to Ontario when I was young. Like so many Métis, my culture was hidden from us as my father did not want us to experience the discrimination he had suffered. True Métis spirit, however, cannot remain hidden as I found beadwork, or perhaps it found me after I retired. Beadwork is medicine and is a gift. Beading alone is contemplative, restorative and quietly connects me to my culture and ancestors. Beading circles create community, friendship and learning opportunities. This art form enabled me to connect to Red River Métis in Manitoba and Beyond Borders that otherwise would not have been possible. Wahkowtowin is my inspiration and my grounding – every time I sit down to bead, I want my pieces to honour connections to nature, kinship, community and ancestors.
